Merle J. Whaley developed the flexible three-line format during his 24-year tenure as a classroom teacher. With three lines per student, the first line can be used for attendance or essential skills. The second line can be used for all of the student's scores, such as daily work, quizzes, projects, and test scores. And, most importantly, the third line can be used to show a running total of each student's grade. When a parent calls or visits, all of the information for their child is available in seconds.
